Title: British TV
Post by Michael on Aug 12th, 2013 at 8:42pm
With the expected turn off of our link to the old country I put the following web-site on my computer (whilst back in England recently).

http://www.tvguide.co.uk/?systemid=19&gridspan=09:00

Imagine my surprise when I tried the 'watch'  facility over here WITHOUT hiding my IP location.  It works for me!!!  I can even watch Freeview channels that are not on Freesat such as 'Dave' and, of course, programmes from the long lost Channel 5 stable.

I would be interested if others have success with it.  For the record I'm on a Telefonica land line which tends to give me about 2.5 meg.

I wonder if the fact that I was in UK when I loaded it makes any difference.  (The 'Watch' facility should read 'View")

Great site. A cheap surround sound system from Confort, flock wallpaper and a plastic carton of Kia ora is all you need.

Filmon must have something to do with this because their logo and adverts come up occasionally.

Expat Shield which is free will give you a different Uk IP every time you log on no matter where you are,  :)

I'm the same as Nen, says it's loading but it does nothing. I'll try it on my laptop the next time I'm in the U.K. I normally use expat shield for BBC iPlayer and ITV catch up, that works fine as long as Adobe Air is monitored.

It hasn't changed yet - still no confirmed dates but it is in testing and is in it's third week so I guess it will change in 3 - 5 weeks.

If it's not done before 15th December then it won't change until after Christmas as there is a freeze on changes during this period.

Five new HD channels start today. Freesat viewers do a re-scan to get them up.Sky viewers should have them appear in your EPG.The channels are....BBC Three HD, BBC Four HD, BBC News HD, CBBC HD, and Cbeebies HD.Sat 2E is still at 43 degrees so it looks like we will be "Safe" until after Christmas as Nigel states 15/12 is the "magic" day.

Horrid Henry in HD ohhhhhh I can't wait.   ;D

Latest news today from SES the company that owns/deals with the various change over of channels which will effect us here in Spain. This email was sent to a Sat rigger in France who requested an update........

SES wrote: “As part of SES’ ongoing fleet renewal programme, we will be transferring all the UK Spot Beam transponders currently operating on ASTRA 1N across to ASTRA 2E. This move at the 28.2/28.5ºEast orbital location will take place over several weeks beginning early February 2014. The transfer will have no adverse implications for viewers in the UK and Ireland as the affected channels will continue to operate on the same frequencies and will be broadcast at the same, or slightly improved power levels, across the UK and Ireland. TV viewers outside the UK and Ireland may see an impact and may not be able to receive channels from ASTRA 2E UK Spot Beam, which has a smaller footprint than ASTRA 1N. The new footprint on SES’ replacement fleet has been designed to meet the requirements of UK and Irish broadcasters who target their channels for distribution in the UK and/or Ireland. UK and Irish broadcasters hold broadcasting rights only for the UK and/or Ireland but not for other countries.”

Your viewing over Christmas appears secure.

Thanks to Robs Sat tv for the info.

Post by Bunter on Dec 12th, 2013 at 12:55pm
Sky of course will be using the Pan European Spot Beam which mean after change over We should be able to get most channels with a larger dish. The size of the dish should be about 150cm-180cm as these have been tested from outside the UK and picked up Sat 2F which mirrors the SAT 2E.So Nigel's new dishes should do the trick. We shall wait until the change over to see the actual impact on our dishes as various tweaks and adjustments to the spot beams are made after change over.

I just hope with the mad rush in 1.8m dishes being sold, that the price comes down !!! I cannot see why there is such a change in price from a 1.5- £300ish  to a 1.8  7-800ish ?

Aimed more to the UK but I am sure Europe as well as they offer a delivery service here.Too expensive for me but interesting re information.

The new satellite is moving as we speak towards 28.2 degrees having finished its various testing (it will take about 21 days to reach 28.2). Mid-Feb will show us what channels we will lose when it goes into service. BBC and ITV look like they have gone.It may will be in due course that SKY may carry BBC and ITV for those who pay up on the Pan European beam. Or you could Buy Apple TV and just flash BBC iplayer from your ipad to your TV or wait for dish prices to drop. If you can get all the channels on Sat 1N at the moment you will get them all on transfer day because it looks like the new satellite 2E will mirror 1N and just transfer all the transponders over from one to the other. (Channels) Anyway the long wait will soon be over There are a lot of bright people out there and solutions I have no doubt will be forthcoming. Research before parting with any of your cash first ! Failing all this you could always throw your telly out and read a book or talk to your other half for once.......Reaches for phone to order one of Nigel's "Big Ones"

;D ;D

I doubt SKY will carry BBC or ITV channels on a pan european beam as neither the BBC or ITV have distribution rights for programs outside of the UK so if they were to offer the service outside the UK it would open a can of worms relating to copyright, distribution etc. etc. that I'm sure they wouldn't want to open.

It may also jepordise the SKY service which should not be broadcast to or have subscribers outside the UK for the same reasons. SKY are obviously fully aware that they do have European subscribers and for this reason they will not want to lose millions in revenue by cutting off their 'illegal but paying' subscribers in Europe.

It was interesting the case of BTSport at the end of last year.  It moved from Eutelsat (with pan-european coverage) to Astra 2F on a UK spot beam. Lots of 'European subscribers' who shouldn't have a subscription lost their service. Miraculously a few days later it moved from the UK spot beam to a pan-european beam. I guess the thought of the cancelled subscriptions was too much for them to bear.

Unfortunately the BBC and ITV don't charge subscriptions so will not lose anything by restricting their service to UK only.

Time will tell...

I have apple TV and you can change the DNS settings to show you are in the USA which I pay 7.99 dollars a month for USA version of netflix. not £7.99 pound for the UK poorer version in way of content. At the moment you can not get BBC on apple TV but you can use an Ipad that can be mirrored onto your TV and use iplayer that way. I think you can use airplay that does not require an HDMI cable but at the moment I can only get my apple TV to work on an Ethernet cable it could be iberbanda or me I am still working on it.

You can buy from ebay a jail broken apple TV 2 I have apple tv 3 which can not at the moment be changed from the apple format. These apple TV 2 have lots of added software and effectively all your films sports and everything else is FREE !!!! The seller in the link below is the best at this sort of thing.you can email him or talk to him just for advice. He is in the UK not is some shed just off the great wall of china. He explains what this item is all about.Expensive but no more subscriptions and future proof re updates. If buying one of these make sure its untethered.

With regards a VPN to watch BBC iplayer I have tried all the free ones and a few pay systems but the one I have found the easiest and has not let me down is tunnelbear. Costs 4.99 dollars a month pay though paypal and cancel any time. That is unlimited downloads. or you can have it for free but the limit is 500mbs per month.

Good luck.   :)

Be careful, as I read on another forum that there are 'cowboys'

Also while everyone seems to be receiving the T.V. channels at the moment via different sources, this probably won't last for long. The internet etc. won't cope.

Thanks all for so much great advice! We were using expat but the break up in all programs was terrible so was hoping to find a better service. I will try some of these although I do get nervous about paying for things.  Im not so nervous paying via paypal tho.
Still frustrated.  I did get tvguide in UK on ipad but do not have apple tv so would take so long to get it here that olympics would be over!
Id hoped the sports channels would have been showing the olympics, or it would be visible online somewhere somehow.  Seems Spanish TV isnt showing any of it from what I can see.
Thanks again guys

Title: Re: British TV
Post by Nigel on Feb 8th, 2014 at 7:02pm
This is exactly what will happen and will probably only get worse as more people try to stream via the internet.

I spoke to Eurona and they are starting to see saturation of the available bandwidth on the link that comes to here via Tarragona. This will result in inevitable breakup.

As I have stated before, WiMax is not capable of supporting this volume of traffic.

The only viable solutions are:
1. If you have ADSL then IPTV will work
2. A bigger dish.

Remember that ITV and Channel 4 will be gone at the beginning of the week.

Thanks Nigel.  I'm suffering badly from out of lip-sync; not me, the tele.  As it's a recent thing, is this us or 'THEM'? If it's us will a new decoder solve the problem?

Title: Re: British TV
Post by Nigel on Feb 10th, 2014 at 10:23pm
Terrestrial or satellite? If terrestrial why are you using a decoder as your TV (if it wasn't zapped by the storm!) should have a TDT decoder in it. Any particular channel?

Title: Re: British TV
Post by ColinB on Feb 11th, 2014 at 2:18pm
The tv is fine and presumably the lip-sinc problem will be totally and finally solved when all current channels have gone to their new satellite!   Hopefully the existing dish can be aligned to some other satellite offering a news service (at least) in English  pending the arrival of Jodrell Bank in the garden ..? Is this possible?  I'm planning a new Freesat digibox to take the advantages they offer.

ASTRA 2E POWER INCREASED ON 12 FEB
Many correspondents have reported BBC & ITV returning over the past few days. There was a marked improvement towards the end of last week. One expert suggested it may have been because the satellite's travelling wave amplifiers need time to "burn in". Another possibility is that 2E developed a problem during tests, that it has never been able to develop full power, and that this is the best we can expect. This may have been the reason it spent two months longer than expected parked at its test position. It should not be discounted that power has been deliberately reduced.

If the BBC has returned with slight breakup in the past few days, you are only likely to lose it completely in rain from now on. An upgrade to the next dish size up should cure this problem, but to be sure, move up two sizes.
If you can only receive BBC & ITV in the mornings and late evenings, the same applies.
If BBC & ITV have not returned by now they may never come back.
There are further channel changes coming over the next few months, with the likely closure of Astra 2A, the addition of Astra 2G, and new HD services for ITV One.  :)

With regards watching SKY Is this the end of IPTV viewing ????

SKY VIEWING CARDS
All of Sky’s 10 million viewing cards are likely to be replaced this year.

The last time this happened was in 2009, when six-year-old "yellow house" cards were replaced. Some who had bought Sky cards through grey market suppliers in mainland Europe didn’t receive their new cards, and were cut off.
White Sky Viewing cardThis time, Sky will introduce new security measures to counter growing piracy. BBC London recently exposed a network of retailers and installers selling hacked receivers, which enable thousands in the UK to view Sky illegally.
Sky have steadily increased security over the past few years. HD channels are now locked to the receiver a viewing card is paired to and the activation process has moved online for new installs.

...and working fine.  Fitted by our Nigel on Saturday and now with a new HD decoder we can get all the usual channels with Channel 4, Film 4, ITV BBC tv and radio.  Some break up of pic around 20.00/22.00 hrs but BBC NI and BBC2 NI are both, for some reason, more stable than our local regional channels.  Lots of HD but not Film 4 HD for some reason.  The decoder is pretty naff but for 60 euros demonstrates that quality is available from a 190 dish.   Recommended. The dish, not the decoder.

Taken from sky in Madrid to save u the trouble.

I tried this but it didn't work for me I did however get channel 4 back.

ITV ONE RECOVERY: TRY A RE-TUNE
Map of all ITV Regions If you've lost ITV in the recent channel switch, there's an outside chance you may be able to get it back with a re-tune.
Recently we wrote about being able to tune an alternate Channel Four. These ITV One alternate frequencies are much less sure of success, but it's worth a try.
If your ITV One region is London, Granada, Anglia West, Central West, Wales, West, Westcountry South, Border Scotland, Tyne Tees, Meridian South and SE, Central West, Anglia South, Channel, Scottish or Ulster, follow this re-tune:

Go to "Services" then "System Setup" or the "Tools" icon. Choose "Add channels". In the next box enter "10994", then "H", then "22000", then "5/6" in "FEC". Press "Find Channels". In the list that appears, select the channels you want, then press "Save"
You can view them in "Services" then "Other Channels".
Repeat this, only with "11053", then "H", then "22000", then "5/6" in "FEC".
You may be able to see sub-regions of Meridian, Anglia, Yorkshire, Central, Wales, Tyne Tees, Westcountry SW and Ulster on the slightly stronger Astra 2F beam. If you have an HD receiver you may also see Granada ITV One HD. All channels are free-to-air.
Owners of Freesat receivers can try entering an alternate postcode in one of the favoured ITV areas in the Initial Setup procedure, or tuning these frequencies manually in "Setup" then "Manual Tuning". Be warned, however, that this switches the box to "Non-Freesat" mode

BBC GIVES UP ON GLOBAL iPLAYER
Global iPlayer, the international version of its iPlayer, has failed to live up to the BBC's expectations and is to close.
BBC Worldwide, the division charged with selling BBC content internationally, plans to phase out the service. Instead, content for international download will be integrated into an improved BBC.com website.
BBC Global iPlayer logoThe current version, available in 16 countries, is a trial that has never been fully launched.
Alix Pryde, who was the public face of the BBC team which decided to restrict the footprint of BBC services in mainland Europe from 2014, thought that Global iPlayer would be a substitute for the lost BBC services.
In order to view Global iPlayer, an app must first be downloaded from the iTunes store. This can't be from the UK version, it has to be from an iTunes store in one of the countries in the trial. In Europe, these are Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg , Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland.
The iTunes stores in these countries need a registered payment card from a bank in the country of residence to download the app and pay the subscription. This rules out many of those in places such as Spain and Portugal who are on holiday, overwintering, don't have the right bank account, don't have an Apple ID, and don't have compatible devices

I think that the BBC are losing a huge amount of revenue over this.  Like I said on another thread we use a VPN because there is no other way of accessing BBC output, yet I would happily pay them for the service and I'm sure I cannot be alone on this.

I wouldn't give Murdoch any of my money ever.

ITV TO LAUNCH NEW CHANNEL
ITV's chief executive, Adam Crozier, has announced that a new pay TV channel, Encore, will be launching this summer. Showing original, newly-commissioned drama series such as Vera and Lucan, Encore is a joint venture with Sky. It will only be available to paying subscribers on Sky, NOW TV, Sky Go and Sky Store. Live streaming will be available on NOW TV and Sky GO.
It will show episodes from Downton Abbey and Broadchurch.
ITV is making a deliberate move away from heavy reliance on advertising towards a subscription-funded, Sky-dependent model.
In recent years, ITV has suffered badly from downturns in advertising. Encore is part of the plan to counter this. Additionally, there is a new deal to keep high definition versions of ITV 2, ITV 3 and ITV 4 in Sky's premium HD pack.
This means these three channels will not appear on Freesat for a number of years, if ever.
There were rumours that ITV 3 would close, but now it is intended to be a "gold" style drama re-run channel.
Premium Encore programmes will be available for rental on the Sky Store.
ITV Encore is likely to be on the Europe beam, in common with ITV's other encrypted HD channels, meaning easy reception all over Europe for those willing to pay.

ASTRA 2G TO BE LAUNCHED IN MAY
The last of the three replacement satellites for the UK will be launched from the Baikonur Cosmodrome, Kazakhstan this May.
Astra 2G is identical to Astra 2E, seen here in launch preparation Astra 2G's beams will be almost identical to those of Astra 2E and 2F, which are now in service. The 2G addition is likely to be the last major shakeup of services at 28.2º, and will mark the closure of the elderly Astra 2A, which can be received in Cyprus and the Middle East. Its channels will move to the newer satellites.
Though it's unlikely that Sky will move any of its pay package to the UK beam, some brands such as Disney are known to be sensitive about overspill to mainland Europe.
The extra capacity 2G will bring may finally allow the BBC to introduce HD to all its BBC One regional variants.
No BBC channels will be broadcast on the Europe beams.

30 DAY BBC iPLAYER
Catching up with previously-broadcast programmes on BBC iPlayer will become easier when the current 7-day time limit is increased to 30 days. The BBC Trust has also approved proposals for the new BBC Store. International users will be able to purchase BBC DVDs and to download programmes to keep permanently. The new store, to be run by BBC Worldwide, will be the replacement for the Global iPlayer. No dates for these changes have been announced.

For those with a little patience, there is an alternative to the iplayer called get_iplayer. It''s a bit clunky but allows you to download all the iplayer content as .mp4 files that don't expire - ever! I've been using it for a while and got into the habit of downloading tomorrows viewing today. Easiest download is from here: http://squarepenguin.co.uk/downloads/

I'm a bit confused!  I do download BBC programmes from the the BBC site, is it possible to download ITV programmes? & are you saying that you can download programmes BEFORE they are shown with this site?

Sorry for the confusion, you can't download before they have been shown on live broadcast. I was just meaning that I plan my viewing in advance. The get_iplayer program used to allow ITV & CH4 but that bit is broken due to changes by those networks. I hope someone will fix it but don't know when.

NO MORE RESETTING DEFAULT
Prior to last month, it was often necessary to change the "default transponder" on a Sky receiver. This is the frequency which carries the Sky guide. All Sky boxes are programmed to look for this frequency, 11778, to load programme and channel information. Formerly on Astra 2B's north beam, it was difficult to receive in southern Europe, being particularly weak in the afternoon in Spain. Sky boxes would often complain of "no satellite signal" following one of Spain's frequent power cuts. This problem has vanished now that the default transponder is on Astra 2E's much more powerful Europe beam.
It's no longer necessary, and unwise, to attempt to change the default transponder, as a Sky box will always default to 11778 V if this frequency can be received.
