Villa Cars?

Anyone investigated insurance for cars left for the use of renters of holiday properties? Car rental rates are going through the roof, getting equal to property rentals on a per person / car seat basis.
Even if 'no charge' is made for the use of a vehicle then insurers would argue (rightly) that it was an incentive.
One could insist that renters fix their own cover as they wont be using their own car for the duration?
Any experience out there please?

Hi Planespete,
Someone told me recently that if you insure a Spanish car in Spain then the car is insured regardless of who drives it, providing they haven't nicked it and have a valid licence, but I'm not sure if personal injuries are covered or if you need to pay extra for this.

I know all UK policies have a 'not for hire or reward' clause to cover taxi and rental use. I'd be surprised if Spanish policies were different.

I Think you will find the cover drops to third party only for any user but that may well be what you are insuring for at the moment!!

Is the car in question for the use of family and friends or actual paying guests.
If it for paying guests,it might get a bit complicated and do you want the hassle, they would probably have to hire a car if they went somewhere else.If you are using the car as an cost incentive, ask yourself if you need that sort of guest.
If it's for family and friends then it makes it slightly different and you may have to resign yourself to being a 'chauffeur' for the duration.

It's both. The house sleeps 10 and so we often have families over as friends. The car hire adds up. We would also like a second vehicle, at least for emergencies. Finally, a friends visitors hired a people carrier at €800 per week. Ouch!

doyouspain.com is a good site for all-in car hire, use them quite a bit from Reus and are around 500e for an Opel Zafira in July.If you go for the Merc 7 seat version then the cost rises quite a bit.
